Art of the Guitar: Yamandu Costa Plays Traditional Brazillian Seven-Stringed Guitar

The young Brazilian guitarist and composer Yamandu Costa is already considered among the guitar world to be a giant of the seven-stringed instrument, the violão de sete cordas.  He returns to 92Y with a program which highlights South American composers, as well as many of his own compositions.  Mr. Costa, revered in many styles of guitar repertoire, is especially praised for his command of the choro, a Brazilian style known for its virtuosity, fast tempo, and modulations.  Now in its fifteenth season, 92nd Street Y’s acclaimed Art of the Guitar series has become one of the most esteemed concert series in New York to champion classical guitar repertoire and the instrument’s foremost artists.

Celil Refik Kaya at Fort Lee School of Music

Sunday February 28, 2016 the Fort Lee School of Music will host its first International Artist Concert with guitar virtuoso Celil Refik Kaya from Istanbul, Turkey.  We are honored to have the ability to host such events that enrich the community and enhance the cultural landscape of Fort Lee.

Celil Refik Kaya is an artist of exemplary talent having received a full scholarship from Mannes College the New School for Music (Master of Music) in New York City and the University of Texas (Doctoral of Musical Arts).  When he was just 19, Celil earned his Bachelor Degree of Music from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatory with the Highest Honor Degree in Istanbul, and was granted the “Excellence” Scholarship from the Turkish Educational Foundation.  Celil Refik Kaya is an accomplished guitarist having been the top prizewinner at the most competitive international guitar competitions in the United States; Sofia, Bulgaria; Naxos, Greece, and Vienna, Austria.

Mr. Kaya is a world-class performer and this is a concert that you will not want to miss.  We hope to see you this Sunday!

Keith Calmes Recital in Neptune

Friends,

I’m playing a solo classical guitar recital in Neptune this Sunday  (2/21) from 3:00 to 4:00.The concert will be at Holy Innocents Catholic Church (3455 West Bangs Ave.). Admission is by Free Will Offering.

The repertoire will be three large sets of music- traditional repertoire, South American pieces and new commissioned works.

Keith Calmes Recital in Medford

I’m giving a solo classical guitar recital on 2/14 in Medford, NJ from 3:00-4:00.It would be great to see you there.
This concert was postponed from our recent onslaught of snow.
The concert is at the Medford Arts Center:
I’ll be playing traditional classical repertoire (Sor, Bach, Tarrega, etc.), some South American favorites (Lauro, Barrios, etc.) and some newly commissioned works (Will Ayton, Timothy Broege, Stepan Rak and Maximo Diego Pujol).
